Ms. Marvel's biggest strength so far has been how fun and lighthearted it's been. The energy that Iman Vellani brings to the role of Kamala Kham is infectious. You can just tell that she's having a blast portraying this character. She was a huge fan beforehand, after all. She's been fangirling with the co-creator of Kamala Khan and even made off with some Avenger Con goodies from the set. Lucky her! Well, this newest interview with some of the people behind Ms. Marvel has me a little concerned. The directors and showrunner sat down with The Direct to say some of the upcoming episodes are going to be darker. I hope that Ms. Marvel doesn't lose that charm and slight innocence it showed during its first episode!
When asked about the show director Adil El Arbi said "Well, their episodes are gonna be a little bit darker. The stakes are gonna get higher, so let's discuss ladies." and after Sana Amanat warned them about spoilers, the co-director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy went on to add "I think that in searching her identity, Kamala Khan is going to go on this journey to reconnect with her family to understand why it's so important for her to tell her own story and to craft that story. And to feel that she could be that superhero she always wanted to be, except that it would be her being the superhero as opposed to emulating someone else. And on that journey of discovery, we as an audience are going to go on what I can safely say is gonna be the thrill of our lives."
With that being said, I'm going to air on the side of optimism. The first episode was incredible, in my opinion, and I can't wait to see what the rest of Ms. Marvel has in store for us. I truly believe the people behind the show, with how passionate they are, will nail it every step of the way.
If you haven't seen Ms. Marvel yet, I highly recommend you check it out! You can find the first episode on Disney+ already!
