We've been hearing rumors for months now, and they were confirmed on Thursday. The Last Of Us Remake is real! It's being retitled The Last Of Us Part 1, I'm assuming to fit in better with The Last Of Us Part 2. The game is being rebuilt from the ground up for the more powerful PS5 system. The enemy AI is going to change to more closely match that of the second game. The graphics will obviously be better and the game will run at 60 FPS according to Naughty Dog. There will also be "new combat options", whatever that means.
You also have options for which edition of the game you want. There's the base edition, which is self-explanatory but you can also pick between two other versions of this game that was originally on the PS3. The digital deluxe edition includes multiple things you can unlock early in the game compared to the base edition. These are things like increased crafting, healing, and ammo clips for example. The Firefly edition, meanwhile, is the most expensive of the three but comes with a steel book, a display case, and four issues of a The Last Of Us comic. Each of the comics has exclusive artwork on the covers.
Look, I love The Last Of Us. I think the game is phenomenal and I played it both on PS3 and PS4. I'm just not sure this remake is absolutely necessary. A PC port was announced alongside the PS5 version, coming later I believe, but they could have just ported the PS4 game to PC. If I were to venture a guess, I would say its existence has something to do with the upcoming The Last Of Us tv series, but still. It also strikes me as bizarre that there are multiple editions for what was originally a PS3 game, I know the graphics will change but will the gameplay changes really alter the game drastically enough to refer to this as a remake? I'm doubtful, but I hope to be proven wrong. Really, I do.
Here I am complaining about the game but no doubt I'll end up playing it. At the very least, it's nice to finally have confirmation of its existence. Not that many fans were doubting it, I don't think.
The Last Of Us Part 1 will release on PS5 on September 2nd, 2022. A PC port is also in development.
