Sony announced a Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic remake and it looks like it's a PS5 exclusive. For those who don't know Knights Of The Old Republic, also known as KOTR, is considered one of the best Star Wars games of all time. An RPG, too and a remake or sequel is something fans have wanted for years. It looks like it's finally happening since Sony revealed it at the Playstation Showcase on September 9, 2021.
The original game was made by BioWare all the way back in 2003. BioWare is responsible for some truly epic RPGs including both the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. It looks like they're not really involved in the remake though. Aspyr will be filling that role, which isn't too concerning since they have at least some experience with KOTR. The original game was an Xbox exclusive which kind of makes the PS5 exclusivity even funnier. That exclusivity is probably temporary though, as I can't see this game not ending up on the Series X as well. Aspyr Media has ported games before but it looks like this will be their first time remaking something of this caliber, which should be pretty exciting for them! Here's hoping they're up to the task because they really don't want to get this one wrong.
Ryan Treadwell, the lead designer for this KOTR remake, wrote on the Playstation blog about the game. This is where he revealed more details, as the teaser trailer we got was bare of any real details. On the blog he wrote that “We’re rebuilding it from the ground up with the latest tech to match the groundbreaking standard of innovation established by the original, all while staying true to its revered story,”
Other than that and the trailer we know almost nothing about the game. There were a lot of rumors surrounding a KOTR remake earlier in the year, but there was no confirmation until a former Kotaku editor, Jason Schreier, confirmed it on the MinnMax Podcast. Fans are already taking to social media to share their excitement surrounding the news, and I can't really blame them. I'm just as excited as they are.
Other rumors surrounding the title give us even more reason to be excited, though. If the rumors are correct the Knights Of The Old Republic remake will bring some of the game's story elements into the current Star Wars canon. Other people are claiming the game might even include some of the story elements from KOTR 2. None of this has been confirmed yet, though.
I never played the original Knights Of The Old Republic, but I definitely plan on checking this out when it drops for the PS5. There is no release date yet, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for that announcement.
