Ms. Marvel season one is off to an awfully strong start. That's in no small part thanks to the series lead Iman Vellani who all but embodies Kamala Khan. The series perfectly captures Kamala Khan while being respectful to the Pakistani heritage of the characters. Being Pakistani also isn't Kamala's only personality trait - just another part of her, the way it should be. The series has a lot of room to grow before its first season ends and we'll catch up with Kamala in The Marvels alongside Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. For now, Vellani is doing the standard press tour and answering all kinds of interesting questions about the series and her experience making it!
One of her most recent interviews was with Entertainment Weekly, where she also revealed what she loved most about Kamala Khan. Beyond that, she also discussed how much she was fangirling over the character's creator, Sana Amanat.
"I was absolutely fangirling over Sana. I admire her so much. I watched all her interviews and her TED Talk after I read the comics when I was 15 or 16. And knowing that she is a very big part of my life now… I'm truly so lucky to have someone like her in my life. A lot of those conversations at the beginning were mostly just them asking me about my life. I was like, "I can contribute more than this!" and they're like, "No, tell us who your favorite teacher was! Tell us what your favorite subject was. Who did you like in high school?" It was all these questions about high school and growing up and balancing culture and religion and coming of age and everything that comes with being 16 and all the growing pains. It was like therapy. I was spewing all these stories at them, and they incorporated so much of that into the script. I think it made the characters and the story as a whole really real."
It must have been a dream come true to meet the creator of one of her all-time favorite characters. Not to mention the fact that she's now bringing this character to life on the small screen.
