Ms. Marvel: Iman Vellani On What She Loves Most About Kamala Khan

Ms. Marvel is finally here, and as far as I'm concerned it's the most fun of the Disney+ series! Iman Vellani absolutely knocked it out of the park as Kamala Khan. To be completely honest, casting is something the MCU has always been very successful at. This time is no different, as Vellani feels like she was plucked from the pages of the Ms. Marvel comics. Well, she's the perfect Kamala in everything except her power's origins. That's no big deal though, and perhaps the origin of Kamala's powers, once revealed, will be super cool. If you don't believe me check out the first episode on Disney+ right now!

Something that's becoming abundantly clear, however, is that Iman Vellani might be the biggest Ms. Marvel fan out of all of us! Every time I see her in an interview or read something she's said, it really sounds like she's having the time of her life. That's awesome news, and I'm really happy she was chosen as Ms. Marvel! The first episode was great, and I can't wait to see where the rest of the season goes. Not to mention, we'll be seeing her alongside Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in The Marvels sometime in the future.

Most recently Vellani was speaking with Entertainment Weekly, and she talked about all the things she loves most about Kamala Khan.

"The fact that she was a fan first, and [being] Muslim and Pakistani was not the entirety of her personality, which is the way I'm used to seeing most young Muslims in mainstream media. She just felt so different, and her culture wasn't something that she neglected. It's so important to showcase children of immigrant parents who are proud of their culture and don't neglect it and aren't ashamed of who they are. Honestly, it was really inspiring for me because I felt quite dismissive of my culture growing up. Seeing Kamala use her culture as something that guides her and affects her moral code, I thought that was really admirable."

And right she is! Being Pakistani is certainly one of the things at the core of Kamala's character, but it's not what defines her. The Ms. Marvel comic series proved that beyond a reasonable doubt, watching Kamala come into her own and rise up to become a true hero is truly inspirational. Kamala Khan is the first Muslim superhero in the MCU, and it's a big deal that she's highlighting her own series.

If nothing else, the show deserves respect for that alone. Thankfully, it's also incredibly creative, well written, super fun, and thanks to Iman Vellani a whole lot of fun!

Ms. Marvel airs every Wednesday on Disney+, and you can catch the first episode there right now!
