Berry Keoghan Joker
Matt Reeves Reveals His Joker's Backstory

The Batman was absolutely amazing if you ask me. The take on Batman was interesting, exciting and it made for one hell of a Batman movie. There was one part in the end that introduced us to someone who should become The Joker, eventually, in The Batman universe. Whether or not this truly happens is up in the air for now. We don't know what Matt Reeves has in store for his Joker, but he's not even sure he's going to use him. We may not even see him in a potential sequel, according to the director. That could be why he's being so chatty about Barry Keoghan's version of Joker. Now Matt Reeves has revealed his Joker's backstory! It's quite different from previous iterations of The Clown Prince Of Crime!

We first got a good look at The Joker through a deleted scene from The Batman. The scene in question had Robert Pattinson's Batman visit The Joker in Arkham, to ask him for advice in regards to The Riddler. The scene was interesting, and even hints at Joker's potential escape! Since then he's been getting barraged by questions, which is understandable. It was in an interview with Variety that he revealed his Joker's tragic backstory. Turns out that his version of The Joker suffers from a disease, something he was born with as opposed to something he acquired later on. That terrifying smile of his? Part of that defect.

Here's what Reeves had to say.

"It's like Phantom of the Opera. He has a congenital disease where he can't stop smiling and it's horrific. His face is half-covered through most of the film." Reeves said, before adding "It's not about some version where he falls into a vat of chemicals and his face is distorted, or what [Christopher] Nolan did, where there's some mystery to how he got these scars carved into his face. What if this guy from birth had this disease and he was cursed? He had this smile that people stared at that was grotesque and terrifying. Even as a child, people looked at him with horror, and his response was to say, 'Okay, so a joke was played on me,' and this was his nihilistic take on the world."

As I said above, Reeves hasn't confirmed when, or if, we'll see his version of The Joker again. Fans of The Batman are certainly hoping to see him return. Of interest is the fact that Reeves will be working on an upcoming HBO Max series that will focus on Arkham. This series was originally set to focus on the GCPD but has since evolved to focus on Arkham instead. Hopefully, we get word on where The Joker will appear again sooner rather than later.

The Batman is reportedly going to arrive on HBO Max in April.
