Batgirl and J.K. Simmons Jim Gordon
J.K. Simmons Will Start Filming Batgirl Soon

We got to learn a little bit about the Batgirl movie coming to HBO Max during the DC FanDome 2021 event, and it left fans wanting more! We hardly know anything about the movie, but we do know the directors and Leslie Grace, Barbara Gordon herself, are very excited about the film. The concept art was gorgeous and now there's something else cool that was recently talked about. J.K. Simmons is in the movie reprising his role as Commissioner Gordon and he revealed when he's going to be filming! The answer is surprisingly soon, and that's not the only surprising thing. Simmons admitted he was shocked when he was approached to reprise his role as Gordon. It makes sense that Batgirl would need a Commissioner Gordon, but does Simmons' involvement confirm the film is set in the DCEU continuity? As far as I've been able to find, nothing has been said on that front. Simmons' involvement is the best clue we have as to which universe Batgirl may be set in.

It was during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused Podcast that he revealed when he'd be returning to Gotham City.

"I was completely flabbergasted that they came back to me recently and wanted to have me be Commissioner Gordon again, and have it be a more significant role. Leslie Grace is Batgirl and I think I'm actually going to get on the horn with her and the director in the next couple of days and do a little preliminary rehearsals on it. A couple of months from now -- well, they start very soon and then I jump on board sometime in January over in Glasgow, which is a wonderful place to be shooting it because it's gothic. I'm excited to be the once and future Jim Gordon." he told the podcast.

Simmons went on to discuss getting more screentime in Batgirl than he did in Justice League.

"I had a long discussion with the guys about how we want to portray him. And the script, I thought ... I just don't want to give away anything at all, so I'm not gonna talk about the structure of it or any of that, but I thought it was a really interesting take on introducing Batgirl and giving Jim Gordon, fleshing him out certainly more than I had a chance to do in my first foray into that."

We don't know exactly when Batgirl is supposed to come out, only that it should drop on HBO Max sometime in 2022.
