Rent-A-Girlfriend 2x04 Review - "Night And Girlfriend"

Rent-A-Girlfriend season 2 continues with another episode, and as we approach the halfway point of the season can the show keep up its momentum? Here's hoping as we step into the Rent-A-Girlfriend 2x04 review for the episode titled "Night And Girlfriend".

The opening of the episode, I'll admit, had me stressed. Mami is completely unhinged, and though she tries to act nice that's really all it is... an act. I had no idea whether or not she was going to inject the first big drama of the second season, of if she'd remain pleasant. If we hadn't seen the real Mami, or known how things went down with her and Kazuya, I would have bought her act. Instead, that whole interaction left me more stressed, and also worried for Kazuya. I still think Mami is going to lead to some seriously bad things happening later in the season. She was obviously cheese. I still don't know what her motives are but it must be jealousy driven.

Continuing with giving other characters a chance to show up this season, we catch up with Ruka. She still rubs me the wrong way, due to how she ended up dating Kazuya in the first place, but it's also on Kazuya for not putting his foot down. At the very least, I strongly suspected having her at Kazuya's house would lead to some hilarious moments.

Initially, it wasn't hilarious, but more heartfelt. I hate how Rent-A-Girlfriend seems to be making me forget the flaws of each characters and their rocky beginnings. With the exception of Mami, of course. Watching Ruka make the turtle curry was a genuinely endearing moment, and I hate how much I enjoyed it. I even ended up feeling for Ruka, and Kazuya thinking about the whole situation just reminds me how messed up the love triangle between him, Ruka and Chizuru is.

In the end, Ruka's forced to spend the night and after a shower scene for her, I'll admit, her arguing with Kazuya had me laughing. The silly animation when she'd scream, followed by him covering her mouth was legitimately funny, so I gotta give props where it's due. The whole thing was sexually charged, too, and I gotta give Kazuya props for trying to stay strong because he's in love with Chizuru and not Ruka.

What follows was initially hard to watch, but Kazuya won some serious points for me. This entire situation is so twisted, and for a second, I really thought Kazuya was going to do it. But instead, he doesn't want to take advantage of Ruka because he doesn't think this is love. Come on, I know we all love to hate on Kazuya, but that was some cool guy energy right there. I know it made Ruka happy, but I don't know what she gains from staying in this whole situation. It's really messy.

Finally... easily the best part of the episode was Ruka screaming outside so that Mizuhara would hear her. I nearly spit out my drink there, and I can't wait to see the next episode.

Rent-A-Girlfriend season 2 continues to improve, and I'm not so worried every week anymore. If this keeps up, this'll become my favorite summer anime. I'm still bopping to the opening and ending songs, as well.

Rent-A-Girlfriend season two is currently airing weekly on Crunchyroll.
