Rent-A-Girlfriend 2x03 Review - "The Return Of The Girlfriend"

Another week means another episode of Rent-A-Girlfriend. I was dreading the season after the first episode, but the second one really improved things. Where does the third one fall? Well, somewhere in between in my opinion. It doesn't have as many memorable moments but it isn't the worst thing I've ever watched. Despite some more cringe moments, I can at least stand Kazuya. And though this episode wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be, it still leaves me excited for the future.

So, the last episode ended with Chizuru ringing Kazuya's doorbell. Turns out she lost her key and when ensues next is pretty much exactly what you'd expect. Just like last episode, I feel like I have to give a special shoutout to the music during these scenes. It wasn't... amazing, but I noticed it, and thought overall it was pretty catchy.

As usual, Kazuya misunderstands everything and it turns out Chizuru is trying to check if she locked her balcony. I know it's just.. stereotypical anime shenanigans, but I won't lie... I laughed when he grabbed her ass. Like I've been saying, I'm not opposed to stuff like that. I watch anime. Come on. It's mostly Kazuya as a character I've disliked, but since he's been getting better I've been able to more enjoy the shows more. This part had me laughing, as dumb as it was.

It was when Mami rang the doorbell that shit got real though. I don't know why she wants to see Kazuya or what exactly she has to say, but it doesn't seem like anything good will come from this. It looked like everything might be alright, but of course she had to go and notice the bag. She's made clear before that she's a complete psycho, so whatever her plans are regarding this will definitely get Kazuya into some hot water.

The part I enjoyed the most though, again, was when our main characters were fleshed out a little more. We learned a lot about Mizuhara this episode. Her loneliness comes from losing her parents and some severe bullying. It makes sense, and I don't think it's a huge reveal. We hadn't seen her parents at all yet, so something was obviously up. But I like how talking about it with Kazuya was a genuinely heartwarming moment, even if he almost screwed it up. By contrast, he's had a pretty easy life... but thankfully her understands her more now.

We'll finally have the spotlight taken off Chizuru next episode, and that's probably for the best. I just hope that Rent-A-Girlfriend can keep this up, and keep me interested.

Another solid episode.

Rent-A-Girlfriend can be watched weekly on Crunchyroll.
