Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion More Than A Remaster

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is coming back, much to the delight of Final Fantasy fans across the globe. It was revealed alongside the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake. We didn't see much of the game, just a trailer, but it was enough to get people talking. That includes me, who loved the original Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII when it released on Sony's PSP. It was actually one of my earliest Final Fantasy experiences!

Since the reveal fans have been debating whether this game is more of a remake or a remaster. It's a fair question, especially with the Final Fantasy VII Remake going on these days. They could change Crisis Core completely to try and tie it to the Remake. Or it could just be the same game released again with prettier graphics. I'd have been fine with either, personally.

We've been told it's going to go "way beyond" a regular remaster, but didn't know exactly what that means. Well, a recent interview with Everyeye and translated by Nintendo Everything reveals a little bit more about what that means.

According to Tetsuya Nomura it's a little hard to define, but the word reunion ties it all together.

“We had mixed feelings on it, as we weren’t sure about the best way to describe the project. At one point there was also a discussion about calling it a ‘remake’ or a ‘remaster’. I think the product is more close to the definition of a remaster, as the story wasn’t changed at all and it’s always the same game.

On the technical side, however, the graphics have been completely renewed, the models have been remade from scratch, many scenes that in the original were only subtitled are now dubbed, and also the combat system has been updated. We are still uncertain on the term that better describes the game, which is the reason why we used ‘reunion’. It’s really complicated, as it’s much more than a remaster, but at the same time is not a complete remake.”

So, it seems like a lot of work is going to be put into it, at least. The game will include updated character models, redone music, and they're doing the voice work over again, if I understood correctly.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is releasing this December on PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
