The DioField Chronicle
A New Square Enix Tactical RPG! The DioField Chronicle announced!

Yesterday was the State of Play put on by Playstation! They announced a ton of stuff, including the fact that they're suspending Playstation sales in Russia! You know, on account of them invading Ukraine, which really sucks. The presentation was focused mostly on their Japanese developers which means we saw a bunch of really awesome-looking Japanese games. Of course, Square Enix was there and they had a couple of surprises for us as well! They announced a brand new strategy game called The DioField Chronicle! Honestly, at first, I thought they were bringing Triangle Strategy over to the PS5, which would have been equally awesome. Still, this tactical game looks pretty sick!

So, before talking about it any further, check out The DioField Chronicles trailer for yourself!

So far a lot of people online are comparing this to Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Personally, I think it looks quite different. The story it seems to be trying to tell appears far more serious. The art style and graphics are also more reminiscent of Octopath Traveler or even, well... Triangle Strategy. In fact, that IS the game I'd still compare it to most. Triangle Strategy, I mean.

Final Fantasy Tactics is another good point of comparison.

The game will release on PS4 and PS5 sometime this year, which is good news since I hate waiting a long time for my JRPG's! Looking over at you, Final Fantasy VII Remake! The game has everything you'd expect from this kind of tactical RPG. Warring kingdoms, British accents and a high fantasy setting. This one even seems to have summons, so that could be something interesting you don't necessarily see too often!

Funnily enough, all these years later, people have been hoping for a brand new Final Fantasy Tactics game. Or at least some kind of spiritual successor. We got a mobile Final Fantasy Tactics game but that isn't exactly what people had in mind.

There are some high profile people working on the game, and this come from Square Enix themselves!

That includes character designs by Taiki (Lord of Vermillion III and IV), concept art by Isamu Kamikokuryo (FINAL FANTASY XII and FINAL FANTASY XIII) and scenario design by Yuu Ohshima (Fire Emblem Awakening). It also features a stunning orchestrated soundtrack, by world-renowned composer Ramin Djawadi - best known for his work on Game of Thrones, Westworld, Pacific Rim and more!

The DioField Chronicle will release on Playstation consoles sometime this year. Sadly it won't be joining Triangle Strategy on the Nintendo Switch. Let's hope Square Enix has a hit on their hands!
